OCI/PIO
 
An OCI/PIO card provides relief to NRIs from Visa hassles.  It is visa-free entry for people of Indian origin into India.

An OCI is entitled to a lifelong visa free travel to India.  A person registered as an OCI for five years and resident in India in one out of those five years, is eligible to apply for Indian Citizenship.  
 
Eligibility:
  • A foreign national who was eligible to become a citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or after that date
  • A foreign national belonging to the territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947(territories which became part of India – Sikkim from 26.04.1975, Pondicherry from 16.8.1962, Dadra & Nagar Haveli from 11.8.1961, Goa, Daman and Diu from 20.12.1961)
  • The country of the citizenship of the applicant must also allow dual citizenship in some form.
Benefits of OCI
  • It is a multiple entry, multipurpose lifelong visa for visiting India
  • The holder is exempted from reporting with local police authority for any length of stay in India
  • Parity with NRIs in respect of economic, financial and educational matters except in acquiring agricultural land
 
PIO
A PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card allows visa free travel and gives several benefits to the card holder.  The PIO card will be valid only when accompanied with a valid passport.

Eligibility: 
  • A Person of Indian Origin  means a foreign citizen not being a citizen of Bangladesh, Pakistan or other countries as may be specified by the Central government from time to time if;
  • He/she at any time held a Indian Passport; or
  • He/she or either of his/her parents or grandparents or great grandparents was born in and was a permanent resident in India as defined in the Government of India Act, 1935 and other Territories that become part of India thereafter provided neither was at any time citizens of any aforesaid countries (as referred above); or
  • He/she is a spouse of a citizen of India or Person of India origin covered under (i) or (ii) above
 
Benefits of PIO card
  • Cardholder can enter India with multiple entry facility for 15 years
  • Does not have to wait for 2 months to re-enter India and does not need to register if stay is less than 180 days
  • Card holders have access to special counters for speedy immigration clearance
  • Parity with NRIs in all facilities in economic, financial and educational matters except acquisition of agricultural land.
